Jagnar was half a meter taller than Kriki. That was a lot of real estate.

When Vi pulled the trigger, she didn’t miss.

He fell to the ground, and Kriki just stood there, frozen.

“Did you—did he? Is he?” Kriki squeaked.

“Let’s get off this planet forever,” Vi said darkly. When Kriki didn’t move, Vi slogged across the sand, put an arm around the Chadra-Fan, and helped her up into the ship.

“That was pleasantly violent,” Pook said.

“That’s an oxymoron,” Vi told him.

“Yes. A pleasant one.”

As Chewie settled in the captain’s chair and the ship took off, Siv asked Vi what would become of the rest of Jagnar’s group.

“We’ll tell the general about them when we return. These people can last a long time in that facility. Hopefully when we get to the other side of the war and things are safe again, we can send someone back for them. And maybe someone will prosecute Con Star for what they’ve done to Parnassos.” Vi looked back at Siv and Torbi and smiled. “But I, for one, am never going back, no matter what the general says.” She put the ship into lightspeed and took up her crochet project. “I’m ready for a little time off.”

“Hrrarrrg,” Chewie said.

“Don’t jinx me,” she shot back.
